The Great Geysir has been documented since at least 1294 and was for centuries the most famous erupting spring in the world — its name, from the Old Norse verb 'to gush', became the generic term for all such features. Earthquakes have periodically woken and silenced it over the centuries; today it rarely performs. Strokkur, drilled and cleared in the early twentieth century, became the dependable star of the field.

The Field The valley steams from dozens of vents, hot pools the colour of swimming-pool tiles, and bubbling mud. A short loop trail passes them all. The water in the pools sits near boiling — the barriers are not decorative.
