Faro Monumental — modern landmark in Chile

Faro Monumental

An iconic lighthouse and fortification built in the 1950s 'Neo-Colonial' style; the panoramic view of the Coquimbo bay and the sound of the Pacific surf define the sensory heritage of Chile's second-oldest city.

Chile's tallest lighthouse was built as a symbol for an entire urban reconstruction program — and it still defines how La Serena presents itself to the Pacific.

About Faro Monumental

Constructed in 1950 as the centerpiece of the Plan Serena urban renewal program under President González Videla, the Faro Monumental was designed in neocolonial style to anchor La Serena's identity as a unified architectural landscape.

Overview The Faro Monumental — the Monumental Lighthouse — stands 22 meters tall at the northern end of La Serena's waterfront, marking the mouth of the Elqui River where it meets the Pacific. Built in 1950 as part of a broad urban reconstruction of La Serena commissioned by President Gabriel González Videla, it is the tallest lighthouse in Chile and one of the defining images of the city's neocolonial architectural identity.

The Story Behind It La Serena was largely rebuilt between 1946 and 1952 under a program González Videla called the Plan Serena — an ambitious urban renewal project that imposed a uniform neocolonial architectural style across new and renovated buildings throughout the city. The aim was to create a distinctive Chilean coastal resort aesthetic, and the lighthouse was conceived as the plan's most visible landmark. Architects drew on Spanish colonial precedents and adapted them for the mid-century program, producing buildings that feel simultaneously historical and designed. The lighthouse became the symbol most associated with the city, and its image appears on regional promotional materials to this day.

What You'll Experience The lighthouse stands at the edge of a small plaza where the Avenida del Mar begins, overlooking the beach and the Pacific horizon. The area around it is a working public space — families, vendors, cyclists — rather than a fenced heritage zone, which gives it an unpretentious accessibility. Climbing the lighthouse is not generally permitted to the public, but the exterior and surrounding viewpoint are freely accessible.

Getting There The Faro Monumental is at the northern end of La Serena's waterfront, walkable from the city center or reachable by bicycle along the Avenida del Mar coastal path.

The Experience

A 22-meter neocolonial lighthouse on a public waterfront plaza — surrounded by working city life, open to approach from all sides, and best at the point where the Avenida del Mar coastal path begins.

Why It Matters

The lighthouse is the visual symbol of the Plan Serena, one of the most coherent urban design programs in Chilean history, and represents the mid-century effort to give La Serena a distinctive architectural character.

Why Visit

The Faro Monumental is more interesting as a document of deliberate city-building than as a lighthouse — and the surrounding waterfront rewards a longer walk in either direction.
