About Juan Fernández Archipelago

Alexander Selkirk was voluntarily marooned on Más a Tierra in 1704 and rescued in 1709; his account inspired Robinson Crusoe. The island was renamed in 1966. The German cruiser Dresden took refuge here during WWI and was scuttled in Cumberland Bay in March 1915.

Overview The Juan Fernández Archipelago sits 670 kilometers off the Chilean coast in the South Pacific — three islands (Robinson Crusoe, Alejandro Selkirk, and Santa Clara) with a combined population of under a thousand people, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation, and the historical footnote of being the real-world model for the most famous castaway story in literature.

Juan Fernández Archipelago, Chile

The Story Behind It Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor, was marooned on Más a Tierra (now Robinson Crusoe Island) by his own request in 1704 following a dispute with his captain. He spent four years and four months alone on the island before being rescued in 1709. His account reached Daniel Defoe, who used it as the basis for Robinson Crusoe. The island was renamed in 1966 to make the literary connection official. The archipelago also played a role in World War I — the German cruiser SMS Dresden took shelter here before being scuttled by its own crew to avoid British capture in 1915, and the wreck is visible from the surface in Cumberland Bay.

What You'll Experience Robinson Crusoe Island has a village (San Juan Bautista), several hiking trails to peaks and historical sites, diving access to kelp forests and the Dresden wreck, and a lobster fishery that produces what locals claim is among the best in the Pacific. The landscape — steep volcanic peaks, endemic vegetation, clear water — is dramatic and ecologically distinctive; roughly 62% of the plant species are found nowhere else.

Getting There Flight from Santiago (LATAM) to Robinson Crusoe Island takes approximately two hours. Boats connect the airstrip island to the main village. Limited accommodation is available; advance booking is essential.

The Experience

Hiking to volcanic peaks, diving the Dresden wreck and kelp forests, lobster fishing culture, and the particular quality of an island where 62% of plant species exist nowhere else on earth.

Why It Matters

The Juan Fernández Archipelago is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with extraordinary ecological endemism, a documented castaway history directly connected to one of literature's most enduring narratives, and a WWI naval episode visible underwater.

Why Visit

The combination of genuine remoteness, literary and historical depth, and ecological distinctiveness makes Robinson Crusoe Island one of Chile's most layered destinations — a place that delivers on multiple registers simultaneously.

Insider Tips

  • 1

Book flights and accommodation months in advance — capacity is limited and demand exceeds it.

  • 2

The Dresden wreck dive requires certification and a local guide; arrange through island operators.

  • 3

Bring everything you'll need — supplies on the island are basic and expensive.
