About Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex
Zollverein operated from the 19th century, and its celebrated Shaft 12, built around 1932 in a Bauhaus-influenced industrial design, became the largest coal mine in the world. Coal mining ended in 1986 and coking in 1993. Rather than demolish the complex, it was conserved as a monument to industrial heritage and converted into a cultural site, gaining UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001.
