Dettifoss

Europe’s most powerful waterfall; the high-intensity roar and 'shatter-crisp' spray of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river create a high-gravity; panoramic experience in the Vatnajökull National Park.

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe — a 100-metre-wide wall of glacial meltwater so forceful the ground trembles, and dramatic enough to open the film Prometheus.

About Dettifoss

Fed by the Jokulsa a Fjollum, Iceland's second-longest river draining the Vatnajokull ice cap, Dettifoss has thundered through this canyon for millennia. It lies within Vatnajokull National Park and forms part of a chain of falls along the river. Its raw scale brought it to global screens as the alien landscape opening Ridley Scott's Prometheus.

Overview Dettifoss, in Vatnajokull National Park in the north, is the most powerful waterfall in Europe by volume of water. Around 100 metres wide and 44 metres high, it hurls a grey-brown torrent of glacial meltwater from the Jokulsa a Fjollum river into a canyon with a force you feel in the ground. The opening sequence of the film Prometheus was shot here.

Two Sides The falls can be viewed from either bank. The east side gets you closer to the brink on a rougher road; the paved west-side road is easier and more popular. Spray drifts far enough to soak viewers on both.

The Experience

The approach is across bleak volcanic desert, and then the canyon opens and the sheer mass of water registers — not tall like Skogafoss but overwhelmingly powerful, grey with sediment, throwing spray high enough to drift over the viewpoints. The vibration through the rock underfoot is what people remember.

Why It Matters

Dettifoss is the benchmark for sheer hydraulic power among European waterfalls and a centrepiece of Vatnajokull National Park. It anchors the Diamond Circle route in the north and is a textbook example of a glacial river cutting a canyon.

Why Visit

If you want raw power rather than postcard prettiness, this is the waterfall to see, and it is the highlight of the north's Diamond Circle. Choose the paved west bank for easy access or the rougher east bank to get nearer the brink, and check road conditions first.

✦ Insider Tips

  • 1

The west-bank road is paved and easier; the east bank gets you closer but is rougher and slower.

  • 2

Expect to be soaked by drifting spray at the viewpoints — protect cameras and phones.

  • 3

Roads here are frequently closed outside summer; confirm they are open before setting out.

  • 4

Combine it with Asbyrgi canyon and Lake Myvatn on the northern Diamond Circle route.
