β€œAt Thingvellir you can walk through the gap between two continents β€” and stand where Vikings founded the world's oldest parliament, the Althing, around the year 930.”

About Thingvellir

From around 930, Iceland's free men gathered annually at Thingvellir for the Althing, where laws were recited aloud, disputes settled, and, in the year 1000, the decision was taken to adopt Christianity. The assembly met here for centuries before moving to Reykjavik. The site was chosen partly for the natural acoustics of the rift wall, which carried a speaker's voice across the plain.

Thingvellir β€” Iceland

Overview Thingvellir is where Iceland's chieftains founded the Althing, a national assembly, around the year 930 β€” making it the oldest surviving parliament in the world. It is also where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart, so visitors literally walk through a rift valley between two continents. UNESCO lists it for both reasons at once: a landscape that is simultaneously geological and political history.

The Rift The Almannagja gorge is the edge of the North American plate, a wall of fractured basalt with a path running along its base. The land between the plates sinks and cracks a few millimetres each year. The crystal-clear Silfra fissure, filled with filtered glacial meltwater, lies within the park.

The Experience

You descend into the Almannagja gorge along the wall of the North American plate, fractured rock rising on one side and the plain opening on the other. Information panels mark the Logberg, the 'Law Rock' where the lawspeaker stood. The sense of two histories stacked on one site β€” continental drift and constitutional birth β€” is what makes the walk land.

Why It Matters

Thingvellir is the founding site of the Icelandic nation and one of the few places on land where a continental divergent boundary is visible and walkable. UNESCO recognises it as both a cultural and geological monument, a combination almost unique among World Heritage sites.

Why Visit

It opens the Golden Circle and rewards anyone interested in either earth science or the roots of representative government. Walk the full length of the Almannagja gorge rather than just the viewpoint, and if you dive or snorkel, book Silfra in advance.
