About Brief Garden

Bevis Bawa began shaping Brief Garden from his family's rubber estate in the 1920s and worked on it for the rest of his life. A noted landscape gardener and a colourful host, he welcomed a stream of artists and famous guests. The garden and house, filled with his own and others' art, were preserved after his death as a tribute to his idiosyncratic creativity, distinct from the architectural fame of his brother Geoffrey.

A Landscaper's Private Eden

Bevis Bawa inherited a rubber estate here and, from the 1920s onward, spent his life transforming it into an artful, informal garden, blending Sri Lankan and European ideas long before such fusion became fashionable. A flamboyant figure who hosted artists and celebrities, he filled the garden and house with his own sculptures, murals and collected art. Brief Garden is the personal vision of one creative man, the lesser-known sibling counterpart to his brother's nearby masterwork.

The Experience

You wander intimate, jungle-fringed terraces, past lily ponds, mossy statues, shaded walks and surprising vistas, the planting lush and the mood romantic and slightly wild. The house holds Bevis's art collection, murals and personal touches. Smaller and more whimsical than a grand formal garden, Brief rewards a slow, curious stroll through one man's lifelong labour of love.

Why It Matters

Brief Garden is a key work of Sri Lankan landscape design and an important counterpart to the legacy of the Bawa brothers, who between them shaped the island's modern aesthetic. It offers an intimate look at a singular creative life and an early example of the tropical-modern garden style for which Sri Lanka became known.
