About Jaffna Fort
A fort was first built at Jaffna by the Portuguese around 1618 and rebuilt by the Dutch after their conquest in 1658 into one of their grandest Asian fortresses, before the British took over. During the civil war from the 1980s to 2009, the fort was fiercely contested and heavily damaged. Post-war restoration has repaired much of the structure, allowing access to the ramparts and grounds.
