About Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil

A temple has stood at Nallur since at least medieval times, associated with the Jaffna kingdom, but earlier versions were destroyed under Portuguese colonial rule. The temple was rebuilt and steadily enlarged in later centuries into the grand complex of today. Dedicated to the war god Murugan, it became and remains the foremost Hindu shrine and cultural anchor of the Tamil north.
