โ€œElla's Nine Arch Bridge was reputedly built with no steel at all - just stone, brick and cement - because the metal was diverted to the war effort during the First World War.โ€

About Nine Arch Bridge

The bridge was constructed in the early twentieth century as part of the British-built hill-country railway that climbs through Sri Lanka's tea districts, one of the great feats of colonial engineering on the island. Tradition holds it was finished around 1921 using only masonry, the steel earmarked for it requisitioned for the war, and credits a local builder with completing it. The railway remains in daily use, and the bridge has become a symbol of the Ella region and of the scenic highland train journey, drawing photographers and travellers to its arches.

Overview The Nine Arch Bridge is a colonial-era railway viaduct near Ella in Sri Lanka's hill country, a graceful curve of nine stone-and-brick arches spanning a green gorge thick with jungle and tea. Trains still cross it on the scenic main line through the highlands, and watching one rumble over the arches with the forest behind has made it one of the most photographed spots in the country.

Built Without Steel By popular account the bridge was completed around 1921 entirely from stone, brick and cement, with no steel, because the metal was diverted to the war effort during the First World War. Whether by necessity or design, the all-masonry construction is part of its fame and its enduring strength.

The Walk and the Train Visitors walk in along the tracks or down through tea gardens to viewpoints on either side, timing their visit to the passing trains. The setting, deep green and often misty, gives it a storybook quality.

Ella's Wider Appeal The bridge anchors a cluster of hill-country attractions around Ella, including Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock, reached on easy walks from the town.

The Experience

The ritual is to walk in along the rails or down through the tea bushes, find a viewpoint, and wait for a train. When one comes, it curves slowly across the arches above the gorge, often with passengers leaning from the open doors, and the whole scene of train, masonry and jungle comes together. Between trains it is a peaceful green spot, and the surrounding tea country and easy hikes around Ella make it part of a relaxed few days in the hills.

Why It Matters

The Nine Arch Bridge is an icon of Sri Lanka's hill-country railway and one of the most recognisable landmarks of the Ella region, celebrated for its all-masonry colonial engineering and its picturesque jungle setting.

Why Visit

It pairs a striking piece of colonial railway engineering with the lush beauty of the tea highlands and the romance of a passing train. Check the train timetable to catch a crossing, walk in through the tea gardens, and combine it with Ella's other short hikes.
