โ€œAt nearly 1,900 metres, Nuwara Eliya is so cool and so full of mock-Tudor bungalows and tea lawns that the British nicknamed it 'Little England'.โ€

About Nuwara Eliya

The British developed Nuwara Eliya in the nineteenth century as a hill-station retreat from the lowland heat, recreating an English town with bungalows, gardens, a racecourse and a golf club. When coffee plantations failed, tea took over the surrounding hills, and Ceylon tea from this region became world-famous. The town has retained much of its colonial layout and architecture, and tea remains the backbone of the local economy and a central part of its appeal to visitors.

Overview Nuwara Eliya, set at nearly 1,900 metres in the central highlands, is the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country and the island's coolest town, nicknamed 'Little England' for the climate and the colonial-era character the British gave it. Surrounded by emerald tea plantations, it has mock-Tudor bungalows, a racecourse, a golf course and a misty, springlike chill that feels a world away from the tropical coast.

A World of Tea The slopes around the town are carpeted in tea bushes, picked by hand, and estate factories offer tours that follow the leaf from plucking through withering, rolling and drying to the cup. Ceylon tea, much of it from these highlands, made the island's name in the trade.

Colonial Hangover The British built Nuwara Eliya as a hill-station retreat from the heat, and its half-timbered hotels, gardens and post office keep that nostalgic, slightly faded atmosphere alive.

Highland Base The town is a base for the surrounding hills, waterfalls and the scenic train line, and for trips to nearby Horton Plains.

The Experience

Days here are cool and green: touring a tea estate and factory, sipping a fresh cup overlooking the plantations, and wandering a town of old hotels, a boating lake and well-kept gardens. The light, the chill and the manicured tea slopes give it a distinctive, almost un-tropical feel. The scenic train through the hills, one of the world's loveliest rail journeys, passes nearby, and the town makes a comfortable base for exploring the highlands and visiting Horton Plains.

Why It Matters

Nuwara Eliya is the centre of Sri Lanka's celebrated highland tea industry and the best-preserved of its colonial hill stations, a distinctive cool-climate town that shaped the global reputation of Ceylon tea.

Why Visit

It offers tea-country scenery, a cool escape from the heat and an atmospheric slice of colonial nostalgia, plus access to the famous hill-country train. Tour a working tea estate, pack warm layers for the chill, and use it as a base for Horton Plains.
