โ€œPolonnaruwa's Gal Vihara carves a serene 14-metre reclining Buddha and its companions from a single granite wall - the masterpiece of Sri Lanka's medieval capital.โ€

About Polonnaruwa

After the fall of Anuradhapura to South Indian invasion, Polonnaruwa became the island's capital in the eleventh century and reached its height under kings Parakramabahu I and Nissanka Malla in the twelfth, who built its palaces, temples and immense irrigation works. The era was a cultural and economic golden age before the capital shifted again. Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, prized for the concentration and preservation of its monuments, and the Gal Vihara sculptures in particular are regarded as a high point of Sinhalese art.

Overview Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the island's medieval golden age, and its compact, well-preserved ruins are among the finest in the country. A walled royal city of palaces, temples, statues and vast irrigation tanks, it is far more concentrated and easier to explore than the older capital of Anuradhapura.

Gal Vihara The undisputed masterpiece is the Gal Vihara, a group of enormous Buddha images carved from a single granite wall: a serene seated Buddha, a standing figure, and a forty-six-foot reclining Buddha entering nirvana, considered some of the greatest sculpture in Sri Lankan art.

A City of Water The city was sustained by the Parakrama Samudra, the 'Sea of Parakrama', a colossal reservoir built by King Parakramabahu I, whose statue gazes over the ruins. His credo that no drop of rain should reach the sea unused defined an extraordinary culture of irrigation.

Exploring the Ruins The site is best covered by bicycle, rolling between palace foundations, circular relic houses and monastery complexes spread through the trees.

The Experience

Cycling the ruins is the ideal way to take them in, pedalling from the royal palace and council chamber to the cluster of temples in the Quadrangle and on to the Gal Vihara, where the scale and serenity of the rock-cut Buddhas stop most visitors in their tracks. The ancient reservoir still shimmers beside the site, and the statue traditionally identified as Parakramabahu, holding what may be a manuscript or a yoke, watches over it all. The compactness makes it satisfying to see thoroughly in half a day.

Why It Matters

Polonnaruwa is the best-preserved of Sri Lanka's ancient capitals and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the centre of the island's twelfth-century golden age of art and irrigation, home to the celebrated Gal Vihara rock sculptures.

Why Visit

It packs Sri Lanka's finest medieval ruins and greatest rock sculpture into a compact, bike-friendly site. Rent a bicycle to cover it, save the Gal Vihara for a quiet moment, and go early before the midday heat on the open ground.
