About Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja survived as Sri Lanka's largest remaining primary rainforest partly because its rugged terrain limited logging, and it was protected as a reserve and later recognised by UNESCO for its outstanding biodiversity. The forest is a living laboratory of evolution, with a high level of endemism, and a key water catchment for the surrounding region, making its conservation vital.

Sinharaja is Sri Lanka's last major tract of primary tropical rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a dense, dripping wilderness in the island's southwest. Though relatively small, it is a biodiversity hotspot of global importance, sheltering an extraordinary concentration of plants, birds, amphibians and other creatures found nowhere else on Earth.

A Treasure House of Endemic Life

The name Sinharaja means 'lion kingdom', and the forest lives up to its mythic name as a refuge for the island's unique wildlife. A remarkable proportion of its trees, birds, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians are endemic, found only in Sri Lanka. Birdwatchers prize it especially for its 'mixed-species feeding flocks', large groups of different bird species that move and forage through the forest together, one of the natural wonders of the reserve.

The Experience

You trek with a guide along muddy forest trails beneath a towering, humid canopy alive with birdsong, the air thick with the smell of damp earth and wild orchids. Patient watchers may witness a mixed-species bird flock sweep through, or spot endemic lizards, frogs, butterflies and, with luck, rarer creatures. Leeches are part of the experience. The dense, primal forest feels worlds away from the beaches and ruins.

Why It Matters

Sinharaja is a globally significant biodiversity hotspot and Sri Lanka's most important rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site safeguarding species found nowhere else. For naturalists and birdwatchers it is a premier destination, and for the island it is an irreplaceable ecological treasure and a symbol of conservation.
