About Viharamahadevi Park

Originally laid out in the colonial era and known as Victoria Park, the green space was renamed after independence in honour of Queen Viharamahadevi. The legendary queen's tale of sacrifice and survival, and her role as mother of King Dutugemunu, made her a fitting namesake. The park remains Colombo's central green lung, beside the city's landmark Town Hall.

Named for a Sacrificed Queen

The park is named after Queen Viharamahadevi, a figure from Sri Lankan legend and history celebrated for an act of extraordinary sacrifice. According to the chronicles, when the kingdom was threatened by the sea, she offered herself to the waves to appease the ocean and save her people, setting out alone in a boat. She survived, washed ashore in another kingdom, and became the mother of one of Sri Lanka's greatest kings, Dutugemunu.
