About Yala National Park

The Yala area was a hunting ground in colonial times before being set aside for protection, becoming one of Sri Lanka's first national parks. Its mix of habitats, from lagoons to coast, supports an unusually rich concentration of wildlife, and its leopards, an island subspecies, became its signature draw. The park's coastline was hit hard by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, with loss of life among staff and visitors, now memorialised in the park. Yala remains the country's premier wildlife destination and a focus of both tourism and conservation.

Overview Yala, in the dry southeast, is Sri Lanka's most famous and most visited national park, a mosaic of scrub, lagoons, forest and coastline that is best known for one thing: leopards. The park is reckoned to hold one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere on Earth, and unlike in many places, the cats here are often seen in daylight, draped over rocks or padding along the tracks.

Overview Yala, in the dry southeast, is Sri Lanka's most famous and most visited national park, a mosaic of scrub, lagoons, forest and coastline that is best known for one thing: leopards.

More Than Leopards Yala is also home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer, buffalo, peacocks and a wealth of birds, set against landscapes that run from waterholes to the surf line of the Indian Ocean. The most wildlife-rich and most visited section is known as Block 1.

On Safari Visitors explore in open jeeps on early-morning and afternoon game drives, the best times for animal activity and for the prized leopard sightings. The park's popularity means vehicles can cluster around a sighting, so a good guide and early start help.

A Coast and a Memory Yala's shoreline was struck by the 2004 tsunami, which is commemorated within the park, a reminder of the coast's exposure.

The Experience

A game drive starts in the cool dawn, jeeps fanning out along sandy tracks past waterholes where elephants drink and crocodiles bask. The hope on everyone's mind is a leopard, and Yala delivers more reliably than almost anywhere, whether a cat resting on a boulder or crossing the track ahead. The density of vehicles at a big sighting can break the wilderness spell, so an early start and a knowledgeable driver who reads the bush make a real difference to the experience.

Why It Matters

Yala is Sri Lanka's most important and most visited national park, internationally renowned for its leopard population, one of the densest known, alongside elephants, sloth bears and a rich coastal-and-scrub ecosystem.

Why Visit

It offers among the best chances anywhere to see wild leopards by day, plus elephants and varied wildlife in dramatic dry-zone country. Go on a dawn drive, choose a reputable guide, and consider quieter blocks or nearby parks if crowds concern you.
