โBanteay Srei's carvings are so fine and deep that they are considered the masterpiece of Khmer art - cut from pink sandstone into a temple small enough to feel doll-like.โ
About Banteay Srei
Consecrated in 967 CE and unusually not built by a king but by a courtier, Banteay Srei was dedicated to Shiva. Its name, 'Citadel of Women', is later and may refer to the delicacy of the carving. It was the subject of a notorious 1923 theft of statuary by the future writer Andre Malraux, and was among the first Angkor temples carefully restored.

Overview Banteay Srei, the 'Citadel of Women', lies about twenty-five kilometres from the main Angkor group and is unlike anything else there. Built in the tenth century and dedicated to Shiva, it is cut from a hard pink-red sandstone that holds astonishingly fine, deep detail, and its carvings are widely regarded as the most intricate and best preserved in all of Khmer art.

Miniature Masterpiece The temple is small and low, almost doll-like in scale, which only sharpens the impact of its dense relief work, elaborate lintels and guardian figures. The name and the delicacy of the carving gave rise to the romantic idea that it must have been the work of women.
The Experience
After the monumental scale of central Angkor, Banteay Srei surprises with its intimacy: you stand close to walls covered in crisp, three-dimensional carving of deities and scenes from Hindu epics, the pink stone glowing warm in morning or late light. Its distance from the main group keeps the atmosphere calmer, though tour groups do arrive.
Why It Matters
Banteay Srei is celebrated as the high point of Khmer decorative carving, exceptional for the precision and preservation of its reliefs in pink sandstone, and a key reason visitors venture beyond the central Angkor temples.
Why Visit
The carving here is in a class of its own and worth the short drive out from Siem Reap. Go early or late to catch the pink stone at its warmest and to beat the midday tour groups, and pair it with the river carvings at Kbal Spean nearby.
