โ€œPhnom Kulen is where the Khmer Empire was born: by tradition Jayavarman II declared himself universal king here in 802 CE, founding the dynasty that built Angkor.โ€

About Phnom Kulen

Phnom Kulen has been sacred since before Angkor, and the 802 CE consecration of Jayavarman II on the mountain is traditionally taken as the founding of the Khmer Empire. The plateau holds early temple remains, riverbed carvings of lingas meant to sanctify the water flowing to the rice plains, and the later reclining Buddha shrine that makes it a major pilgrimage site.

Overview Phnom Kulen is a sacred forested plateau north-east of Angkor, revered as the birthplace of the Khmer Empire: it was here, by tradition, that Jayavarman II proclaimed himself universal monarch in 802 CE and declared independence, founding the line of kings that would build Angkor. It remains one of the holiest mountains in Cambodia.

Waterfall and Buddha The plateau draws Cambodian pilgrims and day-trippers to a popular waterfall where families bathe, and to Preah Ang Thom, a large reclining Buddha carved from a single great boulder at the summit. Nearby riverbeds are carved with sacred lingas beneath the flowing water.

The Experience

A day trip from Siem Reap climbs to the plateau, where the highlight for many Cambodians is the waterfall, busy with families swimming and picnicking. At the summit you climb to the huge reclining Buddha carved into a boulder, and elsewhere you can see the underwater linga carvings. It blends living religion, history and a forest outing.

Why It Matters

Phnom Kulen is one of Cambodia's most sacred mountains and the symbolic birthplace of the Khmer Empire, combining deep historical significance with active pilgrimage, riverbed carvings and a revered reclining Buddha.

Why Visit

It connects directly to the origin of the empire that built Angkor and offers a different, more local and natural experience than the temples. Combine the waterfall, the reclining Buddha and the linga carvings, and expect crowds of Cambodian visitors at weekends.
