Caño Cristales

The 'River of Five Colours' where the endemic Macarenia clavigera plant turns the quartzite riverbed a saturated crimson between July and November; the water flows over ancient; circular potholes and moss-slicked rock; view the 'Los Ochos' section at noon; the overhead sun turns the underwater plants into liquid fire against the yellow sand and green algae.

Between July and November, a river in the Colombian Llanos turns red, yellow, green, and blue simultaneously. The colors come from a plant endemic to this specific riverbed. The combination of conditions that produces them exists nowhere else on earth.

About Caño Cristales

The Serranía de la Macarena's geological isolation over millions of years produced endemic species including Macarenia clavigera, the aquatic plant responsible for the river's color. The region was closed to tourism 1990s–2009 due to FARC presence; the 2016 peace agreement enabled current visitor access.

Overview Caño Cristales is a river in the Serranía de la Macarena National Park in Meta Department that turns multiple shades of red, yellow, green, and blue between July and November — a color display produced by the aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera, which grows on the riverbed and changes color in response to water temperature, light, and flow rate. The river has been described as the most colorful in the world, and unlike most such superlatives, the description is accurate enough to warrant the journey.

The Story Behind It The Serranía de la Macarena is a geological anomaly — an isolated table mountain range that stood apart from both the Andes and the Amazonian lowlands for millions of years, developing endemic flora and fauna found nowhere else. The Macarenia clavigera plant that colors the river is one of these endemics; its color cycle depends on a very narrow combination of water depth, sunlight, and flow speed that the riverbed pools and rapids of Caño Cristales provide. The area was closed to tourism from the 1990s through 2009 due to FARC guerrilla presence; the opening of the region following the 2016 peace agreement allowed visitor numbers to grow significantly.

What You'll Experience Access to Caño Cristales requires a flight from Bogotá or Villavicencio to La Macarena town, followed by a motorboat transfer and a guided hike to the river. The color intensity varies within the season — peak colors typically occur in September and October — and within the river's length, with the Crisoles section being the most photographed. Swimming is permitted in designated pools. The surrounding Serranía landscape of tepui sandstone formations, waterfalls, and endemic vegetation rewards exploration beyond the river itself.

Getting There Flights to La Macarena from Bogotá (1 hour) or Villavicencio (30 minutes) are the only practical access. All visits must be with licensed guides; independent access is not permitted.

The Experience

A guided hike to the colored river sections — most intense at the Crisoles pools — with swimming permitted in designated areas, surrounded by tepui sandstone landscape and endemic Amazonian-Andean flora.

Why It Matters

Caño Cristales is the only place on earth where this specific combination of endemic aquatic plant, water conditions, and light produces a multicolor river display. The conservation significance of the Serranía de la Macarena's endemic biodiversity extends beyond the river to the entire landscape.

Why Visit

The river delivers on the photographs — the colors are real, the pools are swimmable, and the surrounding landscape is ecologically distinctive in ways the river alone doesn't capture. Few natural sites justify a long-haul journey this completely.

Best Season

🌤 July through November, peaking in September–October. Outside this window the water levels are either too high (rains wash out the plants) or too low (plants don't bloom). Access is closed in the off-season.

Insider Tips

  • 1

Book flights and guides well in advance for September–October — the peak window is short and demand is high.

  • 2

Wear water shoes — the riverbed crossing is mandatory and the rocks are slippery.

  • 3

Budget two nights in La Macarena to allow a full river day without rushing the flight connections.
