The caves formed in limestone laid down when this area was beneath the sea, then dissolved into a maze of chambers over time. They are wrapped in folklore: some passages are said to stretch for many kilometres, even reaching the coast or Kenya, and certain chambers serve as shrines where people leave offerings to ancestral spirits, known as mizimu, and pray for healing or children.
