โ€œKilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain on Earth - a snow-capped volcano rising alone from the equatorial savanna, climbable on foot but ruled by the thin air at 5,895 metres.โ€

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro has loomed over the lives of the Chagga people on its lower slopes for centuries and entered wider fame in the nineteenth century when European explorers reported, to general disbelief, snow on a mountain at the equator. The summit was first reached in 1889 by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller with the local guide Yohani Kinyala Lauwo. The mountain and its forests are protected within Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trekking became a major industry for the region, while scientists have tracked the steady retreat of its glaciers as a stark marker of a warming climate.

Overview Mount Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 metres above the plains of northern Tanzania, the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain on Earth, meaning it is not part of any range but stands alone, a dormant volcano lifting straight out of the savanna. Its snow-capped summit on the equator, visible from far across the surrounding country, has made it one of the most coveted climbs in the world.

A Walkable Giant Unlike the great peaks of the Himalaya, Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing or ropes; the standard routes are long, high walks. That accessibility draws tens of thousands of trekkers a year, but the altitude is unforgiving, and reaching Uhuru Peak depends far more on acclimatisation and pacing than on raw fitness.

Climates in One Climb The ascent passes through a remarkable sequence of zones: cultivated foothills, dense rainforest, open moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit world of ice and rock. Climbing Kilimanjaro is often described as walking from the equator to the Arctic in a week.

Vanishing Ice The famous summit glaciers and snows have shrunk dramatically over the past century and may largely disappear, lending the climb a note of urgency.

The Experience

A Kilimanjaro climb is a multi-day expedition with guides and porters, moving slowly up through forest and moorland to high camps, the mantra 'pole pole', Swahili for 'slowly, slowly', repeated to protect against altitude sickness. The final push to Uhuru Peak usually starts around midnight, a cold, breathless trudge to reach the summit at sunrise. Standing on the roof of Africa, above the clouds with the glaciers alongside and the plains far below, is the reward for the effort. The descent is quick by comparison, dropping back through the climate zones in a day or two.

Why It Matters

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, the centrepiece of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the planet's most iconic and sought-after non-technical climbs.

Why Visit

It offers the chance to stand on the roof of Africa on a trek rather than a technical climb, through an extraordinary range of landscapes. Choose a longer route for better acclimatisation, walk 'pole pole', and use licensed operators with proper guides and porter welfare.

โœฆ Insider Tips

  • 1

Choose a longer route such as Lemosho or Machame; more days mean better acclimatisation.

  • 2

Walk 'pole pole' (slowly) and treat any altitude symptoms seriously; descend if they worsen.

  • 3

Climb in the dry windows, January to March or June to October, for the best conditions.

  • 4

Use a reputable operator that pays and equips its porters fairly; ask about porter welfare.

  • 5

Pack for everything from rainforest heat to sub-zero summit cold in a single climb.
