About Husuni Kubwa
Husuni Kubwa was commissioned by Sultan al-Hasan ibn Sulaiman in the early 14th century, when Kilwa controlled the lucrative gold trade up the coast. Built of coral stone on a headland, it combined a royal residence with a vast trading warehouse. The palace was abandoned, possibly never fully completed, as Kilwa's fortunes faltered, leaving the dramatic clifftop ruins.
