A Self-Contained Eden Most of the crater's animals stay year-round, sustained by permanent water and grazing. Lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos and huge numbers of zebra and wildebeest live on the floor, and it is one of the best places in Africa to see the critically endangered black rhino, making the crater a rare spot to see all of the Big Five in a single day.
Maasai and Wildlife Together The crater lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a pioneering reserve where Maasai pastoralists graze their cattle alongside the wildlife, a model of shared land use.
