About Nungwi Beach

Nungwi was, and remains, a working fishing and dhow-building village, famous along the coast for the wooden boats crafted on its beach by traditional methods. As Zanzibar's tourism grew, its swimmable water and sunsets at the island's tip drew development that turned it into the leading beach destination. The growth has brought a lively resort strip alongside the village's older life of fishing and boatbuilding, a balance the community continues to negotiate.

Overview Nungwi is a village and beach at the northern tip of Zanzibar, the island's most famous stretch of sand and a classic image of the Indian Ocean: powder-white beach, turquoise water and traditional wooden dhows drawn up on the shore. Its position at the top of the island gives it a crucial advantage over the east coast, where the tide retreats vast distances.

Swimmable Tides On much of Zanzibar's east coast, low tide pulls the sea out so far that swimming becomes impossible for hours. At Nungwi the deeper water close to shore means you can swim through most of the tidal cycle, which, along with the sunsets, is the main reason it grew into the island's leading beach resort.

Dhows and Diving Nungwi has a long tradition of dhow building, and you can still watch the wooden boats being made by hand. The waters offshore offer good diving and snorkelling, and sunset dhow cruises are a staple.

A Lively Strip The village has grown a busy strip of hotels, beach bars and restaurants, livelier than the quieter east-coast beaches.

The Experience

Days at Nungwi run on sun, sea and dhows: swimming in clear water that stays accessible through the tides, watching boatbuilders at work, snorkelling or diving offshore, and ending with a sunset dhow cruise as the sky turns. The beach-bar strip keeps the evenings lively. It is busier and more developed than the east-coast beaches, which suits travellers wanting nightlife and water sports, while quieter Kendwa lies just around the point for a calmer scene.

Why It Matters

Nungwi is Zanzibar's most popular beach and a centre of traditional dhow building, distinguished by its swimmable tides at the island's northern tip and its blend of working village and resort.

Why Visit

It is the easiest place on Zanzibar to enjoy classic Indian Ocean beach time with reliable swimming and lively evenings. Swim and snorkel through the day, watch the dhow builders, and take a sunset dhow cruise; slip to nearby Kendwa if you want quieter sand.
