About Bardiya National Park

The Chitwan valley was long a hunting reserve and a malarial frontier that limited settlement, which inadvertently protected its wildlife. After malaria control opened the area to migration in the mid-twentieth century, habitat and rhino numbers collapsed, prompting the creation of the national park in 1973 to protect what remained. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chitwan became a model for community-linked conservation and anti-poaching, with rhino numbers recovering strongly. The shift away from elephant-back safaris reflects a broader move toward more responsible wildlife tourism.

Overview Chitwan National Park, in Nepal's subtropical southern lowlands, is the country's first national park and one of the best places in Asia to see big wildlife in the wild. Its grasslands, sal forests and river floodplains shelter the greater one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, wild elephants, sloth bears, gharial crocodiles and hundreds of bird species, a startling contrast to the snow-and-stone image of Himalayan Nepal.

Rhinos and Tigers Chitwan is most famous for its one-horned rhinos, which graze the grasslands in numbers that make sightings common, and for its Bengal tigers, far rarer and harder to glimpse but undeniably present. The park has been a flagship for Nepal's notable successes in anti-poaching and rhino conservation.

On Safari Visitors explore by jeep, on foot with trained guides, and by dugout canoe on the rivers, where you drift past basking crocodiles and waterbirds. Old elephant-back safaris have largely given way to more ethical jeep and walking options.

Tharu Culture The park borders the homeland of the Tharu people, whose villages, stick dances and distinctive architecture form part of the wider Chitwan experience.

The Experience

A typical visit mixes a jeep drive through grassland and forest, a guided walk that brings the jungle close and a little tense, and a canoe glide past crocodiles and herons on the river. Spotting a rhino grazing in the open grassland is the near-certain highlight; a tiger sighting is a rare prize. Evenings often include a Tharu cultural show and the slow river-and-forest atmosphere of the lowland buffer villages. It is a complete change of pace and landscape from the mountains, and a reminder of how varied Nepal is.

Why It Matters

Chitwan is Nepal's first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, internationally important for the conservation of the greater one-horned rhinoceros and Bengal tiger, and a flagship for the country's community-based wildlife protection.

Why Visit

It offers genuine big-wildlife safari in Asia, including reliable rhino sightings, plus a vivid contrast to Himalayan Nepal and a window into Tharu culture. Choose ethical jeep and walking safaris over elephant rides, go early or late for animal activity, and allow two nights.
