The Sherpa Culture Museum was created near Namche Bazaar, the main town of the Khumbu, to preserve and share the heritage of the Sherpa people and their intertwined history with Himalayan mountaineering. Its collections gather historic photographs of pioneering Everest expeditions alongside artefacts of traditional Sherpa life, telling the story of the community that has guided climbers to the world's highest peaks.

The People Behind Everest
No story of Everest is complete without the Sherpas, whose strength, skill and knowledge of the high mountains made the great expeditions possible, most famously Tenzing Norgay's first ascent with Edmund Hillary in 1953. The museum honours this legacy with galleries of early expedition photographs, mountaineering history, and exhibits on Sherpa daily life, from a traditional kitchen with its yak-butter tea to religious objects, dress and customs of the Buddhist Sherpa community.
