Ten million litres of ocean sit behind a glass panel in the middle of a shopping mall, and sand tiger sharks cruise past shoppers carrying designer bags.
About The Dubai Mall Aquarium
The aquarium opened with the Dubai Mall in 2008 and has expanded its collection and exhibits since. The main viewing panel set a Guinness World Record for the largest acrylic panel. The facility maintains breeding programmes and has contributed to marine research in the Gulf region.
The Dubai Mall Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is a 10-million-litre tank built into the ground floor of the Dubai Mall, one of the world's largest shopping centres. The tank holds over 33,000 marine animals and features a 270-degree walk-through tunnel that places visitors inside the water among sharks, rays and groupers. The viewing panel facing the mall concourse is one of the largest acrylic panels ever installed.
A Coral Reef in a Shopping Mall
The engineering is the first thing that strikes you: a 32.88-metre wide, 8.3-metre high acrylic panel separates ten million litres of saltwater from a shopping concourse where people carry bags from designer stores. Behind the panel, sand tiger sharks cruise past, spotted eagle rays glide overhead and schools of smaller fish move in coordinated formations. The walk-through tunnel extends under the tank and provides a 270-degree view, with sharks passing directly overhead. The upper floors house the Underwater Zoo, with themed habitats including a rainforest section, a rocky shore and a living ocean exhibit. The aquarium maintains a breeding programme for several species and has one of the largest collections of sand tiger sharks in captivity. Late-night feeding sessions, when the crowds thin and the lighting shifts to blue, offer the most atmospheric viewing.
The Experience
The free view from the mall concourse is impressive on its own: the panel fills your field of vision with blue water and moving shapes. Inside the paid section, the walk-through tunnel is the highlight, with sharks and rays passing overhead at arm's length. The Underwater Zoo upstairs adds context with different marine and freshwater habitats. Late evening visits, when the mall is quieter and the tank lighting shifts, are noticeably better than daytime.
Why It Matters
The Dubai Mall Aquarium is one of the largest suspended aquarium installations in the world. It brings marine biodiversity into an urban commercial environment and maintains active research and breeding programmes.
